When caring for patients experiencing acute or chronic pain, our primary focus as healthcare providers must be on delivering the most effective, compassionate treatment possible. However, it is equally important that we consider the comfort and well being of the individual throughout every step of the care process. This is particularly true in the specialized setting of a dedicated pain management clinic, where patients are often undergoing intricate, sometimes uncomfortable procedures. One key area where we can significantly improve the patient experience is by minimizing unnecessary movement during diagnostic and interventional pain relief procedures. Many of the techniques utilized in a pain clinic, such as joint injections or spinal cord stimulator implantation, rely on imaging guidance provided by modalities like fluoroscopy. While these imaging tools are essential for ensuring accurate needle or instrument placement, the requirement for the patient to remain relatively still during the procedure can understandably be a source of anxiety and discomfort. To address this, pain management facilities should prioritize the use of specialized equipment and techniques that allow for the greatest possible patient comfort and immobilization. For example, some fluoroscopy suites are equipped with radiolucent procedure tables that feature a translating top. This allows the clinician to adjust the patient’s position for optimal imaging without requiring the individual to reposition their entire body. Beyond the equipment itself, pain clinic staff should also be trained in techniques to gently guide and support the patient during imaging-guided interventions. Maintaining clear, compassionate communication, providing comfort measures like warm blankets, and  talking the patient through each step of the process can go a long way in alleviating anxiety and discomfort. Ultimately, the provision of patient-centered care should be a defining characteristic of any pain management practice. By making a concerted effort to minimize unnecessary movement and prioritize the comfort of the individual, we can ensure that patients feel safe, supported, and empowered throughout their treatment journey. This holistic approach not only improves the overall patient experience, but also enhances the effectiveness of the care we deliver.
